Biography

Opeth was founded in Stockholm, Sweden in 1989 by guitarist and vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt, who remains the sole constant member and creative driving force. The band developed a unique sound that seamlessly integrated death metal aggression with acoustic passages, folk influences, and progressive rock structures across lengthy, multi-movement compositions.

Albums like Still Life, Blackwater Park, and Ghost Reveries are considered masterworks that transcend genre classification. Their controversial shift away from death metal toward pure progressive rock — beginning with Heritage in 2011 — divided fans while opening up new creative avenues that albums like Sorceress and In Cauda Venenum have explored magnificently.
